Ships
Ships are at the core of OGX gameplay. They allow you to transport resources, explore deep space, attack other players, recycle debris fields and colonize new worlds.
This page gives a quick overview of the main ship roles. For exact stats (cost, speed, cargo, consumption, attack, shield), always refer to the in-game Shipyard.
Main ship categories
In OGX, ships can be grouped into three broad categories:
- Civilian ships – transport, recycling, colonization, scouting.
- Combat ships – attack, defense support, fleet battles.
- Special ships – powerful, expensive or very situational.
Civilian ships
These ships are mainly used for economy and logistics:
- Small Cargo
- Fast and cheap transport ship.
- Ideal in early game to move small amounts of resources between planets.
- Large Cargo
- Slower than Small Cargo but with much higher cargo capacity.
- Core ship for medium and late-game resource transport.
- Recycler
- Collects debris fields after battles.
- Essential for turning destroyed fleets into resources.
- Very important in PvP and for big fights.
- Colony Ship
- Used to colonize new planets.
- Consumed on successful colonization.
- Key to your empire expansion – see Colonization for details.
- Espionage Probe
- Ultra-fast scout ship.
- Used to scan other planets and moons, see defenses, fleets and resources.
- Relies heavily on your Espionage Technology level.
Combat ships
Combat ships are used to attack other players or defend your planets:
- Light Fighter
- Cheap, fast and fragile.
- Good in large numbers in early game.
- Useful as meat-shield in mixed fleets.
- Heavy Fighter
- Better shield and attack than Light Fighter.
- More expensive but more resistant to defenses.
- Cruiser
- Fast attack ship with strong firepower against light targets.
- Excellent for breaking light defenses and fighters.
- Battleship
- High attack and good speed for its size.
- Core unit for many attacking fleets.
- Battlecruiser (if available on your server)
- Specialised in killing other ships (especially Battleships).
- Very efficient in fleet vs fleet combat.
- Bomber
- Designed to destroy defenses.
- Higher consumption and slower than other ships, but very effective against fortifications.
- Destroyer
- Heavy ship with strong attack and good shield.
- Powerful against large fleets and big defenses, but expensive.
- Deathstar
- Extremely powerful and very slow.
- Massive firepower and very high durability.
- Mainly used for destroying moons or for specific late-game strategies.
(Names and exact availability may vary slightly depending on the OGX universe configuration.)
Special roles
Some ships shine in specific contexts:
- Raiding
- Fast ships with decent cargo: Light Fighters, Cruisers, Battleships, Small and Large Cargos.
- Target inactive or poorly defended players for profit.
- Fleet battles
- Mixed fleets of Cruisers, Battleships, Battlecruisers, Destroyers and support ships.
- Require good tech levels and coordination.
- Defense breaking
- Bombers, Destroyers, Cruisers and Battleships combined.
- Aim is to overcome strong defensive setups.
- Recycling
- Always bring enough Recyclers when you expect large debris fields.
- Forgetting Recyclers = losing a big part of your profit.
Ships and Expeditions
Certain ships are more suitable for Expeditions:
- Cargos: to bring back resources and ships.
- Some combat ships: to survive hostile encounters.
- Espionage Probes: sometimes used in small numbers, depending on your strategy.
The composition of an expedition fleet depends on your game phase and risk tolerance.
Tech requirements
Most ships require specific Technologies before they can be built:
- Improved drives (Combustion / Impulse / Hyperspace) to unlock faster and more advanced ships.
- Weapons, Shielding and Armor Technologies to increase combat efficiency.
- Astrophysics Technology to unlock expeditions that can bring back ships.
Check the in-game Shipyard for detailed requirements.
Tips for beginners
- Start with a few Small Cargos and Light Fighters to protect your early economy.
- Quickly unlock Large Cargos: they are the backbone of efficient resource transport.
- Do not build only defense: a mobile fleet is often safer and more flexible.
- Always protect your fleet and resources (fleet-save) when you are offline.
- Combine fleet knowledge with the Game rules to avoid pushing or other rule violations.
